Food Prices on the Rise

Is it just me, or are food prices getting a little out of hand? How about you, have you noticed any increase in the cost of food lately?

In an effort to get a handle on this, I decided to do a little research. However, I must admit, this wasn’t something I thought about too much until I saw my friend’s emergency foods web site. I have seen prices go up little by little, but I never actually realized how much those small increments can add up. Have you?

I’ve been seeing, and reading, more and more articles (maybe I’m just a little more attentive now) about food prices. I mentioned one yesterday by the World Bank that said the prices are at "dangerous levels." Today, I read an article posted on moneynews.com titled, Experts: No Limit for Soaring Food Prices.

According to that article, "Food prices rose 3.9 percent last month, the most since November 1974. Most of the increase was because harsh winter freezes in Florida, Texas and other Southern states, which damaged crops."[1] This past winter is just another unforeseen disaster, like tornadoes, earthquakes, tsunamis, and hurricanes that can cause the price of food to rise. It’s also the reason why we should have an emergency food supply.

If you’re like most people, you probably don’t have enough food in your house to last more than a week. What’s in your pantry and cupboards? Do you have enough food to feed your family if a disaster hits, or if you loose your job? What if the food prices get too high and you can’t afford quality nutritious food, what will you do?

Back in November 2010, Glenn Beck, while talking about the U.S. economic problems, said "food prices will rise 700% to 1000% or more in 2011."[2] Is that the truth? Are we headed in that direction? Well, all you have to do is visit your local supermarket to see how much prices have gone up since last November. If you don’t remember what the cost of milk was back then, how about last month?

Whether you believe what Mr. Beck says or not, we are headed in the wrong direction when it comes to food prices, gasoline prices, and the unemployment rate. When unemployment hits, or gas prices get too high, you can still survive. But how long can you survive without food? I submit to you that food is the most important commodity you need. How’s your emergency food supply?

I’ve been to the store, and I’ve seen the prices go up. I believe we are headed for some tough time in the next few years. I believe that people will be begging for food. And I believe the store shelves will start to become less populated.

I’m not a prophet, or nay-sayer. However, to do believe what I was taught when I was a member of the Boy Scouts of America, and that would be the scout motto, "Be Prepared." We cannot predict what lies ahead, but we can be prepared. Preparedness can even start with watching and tracking food prices. I believe that you will see a significant change, and maybe it will be that change that will get you to take action.

Listening to Become Successful

Why do most work at home businesses fail? Is it a lack of will power or desire? Is it a lack of knowledge of "business" or just the business that you’re involved with? What about a burning desire to succeed, or the willingness to be coached? Do any of the items listed above have anything to do with the high rate of work at home failures?

I believe all of the items listed above can be the downfall of any home business. However, the one factor I believe that caused the most failures in work at home businesses is the failure to listen. Yes, you read that correctly, the failure to listen. You see the majority of people love to talk. They talk about themselves; they talk about their family; they talk about their business; they talk abut their products; and they talk about just about everything else that involves themselves.

In all actuality, what these people are doing is selling. What are they selling? They are selling themselves, their business, and their products. And you know what? Most people hate to be sold! People love to buy, but they hate to be sold. So, if you want to become successful with your work at home business, ask questions and listen.

There is a lot of wisdom in the previous paragraph, because very few people ask questions and then stop to listen to the other person’s answer. However, if you find a successful work at home business owner I can almost guarantee you that that person is very good listener.

I received the following excerpt in an email this morning. I’d like to share it with you.

Will You Stop Talking Long Enough To Listen?

Have you ever been in the instance where you simply could not wait to blurt out what you wanted to say?

Have you ever wished you had said what you had said?

How many times have you gotten into an argument with someone, when neither person was listening to the other person?

Have you ever been in a discussion with someone, only to discover a little later, that both of you were actually saying the same thing?

"Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so"

There is a big difference between hearing and listening

Listening involves 3 processes:

  1. Interpret: This is where you begin to take in the information and assess it. As you hear the information you begin to make judgments on what you hear. You begin to either agree or disagree on the information.
  2. Evaluate: This is when you begin to determine what you will do with the information. Is it useful or not useful? How will you find the information if you find it useful?
  3. React: This is where you have actually evaluated the information, and you have made a full determination of what you think about it. This is the most challenging of the 3 processes; because it is so much better to respond than to react.

There are 4 basic types of communication which people have:

  1. Phatic: This is the "getting to know you" or the "building of relationships" kind of talk.
  2. Cathartic: This is the release of "pent-up emotion" kind of talking. This is the spilling of
    emotional information, troubles, concerns, etc.
  3. Informative: This is the sharing of information, ideas, or data.
  4. Persuasive: This is used to reinforce information or ideas, or to change attitudes to produce a specific action.

"Our listening habits are not the result of training, but rather the lack of it"

Studies have shown that we spend about 45% of our waking hours listening.

It is interesting that we spend almost half of each day listening, yet it is one
of the least taught communication skills.

Tests have shown that immediately after hearing a 10-minute lecture, which was properly heard and understood:

  • Only one half of the information was retained
  • After 48 hours, only 25% is retained

This means that of all things listened to, only 25% will be understood and retained for any real time period.

Good listening habits can be taught, yet they seldom are.

Learn how to listen, and your life will take on great new meaning.

That email, courtesy of the fine folks at Help End Hunger Now, is great for any line of business. If you deal with people on a daily basis you need to know when to talk, when to ask questions, and when to listen. If you do not now how to listen, learn! Yes, you can learn how to listen, and I believe it is necessary to succeed in any business, especially a work at home business. Why? I mentioned it before: "Most people hate to be sold!" On the other hand, most people love to buy.

If your work at home business can get a person out of debt, or can make a person some extra money so they can purchase that new car or home, they will buy into your business. However, do not try to sell them, but rather ask the right questions, and then listen to their answers. When they give you their answer, ask another question, and once again, listen to their answer.

It may take some time to get used to this process; but, if you are persistent and you learn the skill of listening, your chances of becoming successful with your work at home business will greatly increase. If you learn the skill of listening together with asking the right questions, I believe you will be successful.

From time to time people ask me what I do. Taking the low road, I usually say I’m a web designer and SEO strategist, even tough I love my TriVita business. Work at Home Success

When I think of people looking to work at home I typically think about their actual desires to do so. from my experience, I’ve found that many individuals tell you they want to work at home, but many have no idea what it takes to make that transition. So I have to ask the question, "Do they really have the desire, drive and fortitude to do what it takes to work from home?"

Desire alone will not get the job done. I can desire all day long that I want to be a professional football player, golfer, or tennis player, but if I do not put forth the effort, drive myself to be the best, and keep going when the muscles are aching, I will never make it.

Desire is more than wanting something; it’s the will to do what it takes to become what you desire. And that’s no different with a work at home business. If you want to become successful, with a work at home business, you have to have what it takes to overcome the pain and suffering when things are not going as planned.

Too often people quit before their, once sought after, desire fizzles out. Why? Fortitude! The willingness to stay the course when things get really tough; the guts to hang in even though others are telling you it’s time to get a job; and the courage to continue moving towards your goals when the money is not coming in as expected. That’s what fortitude is all about.

Another thing that comes to my mind is discipline! Do you have the discipline to be able to work from home? It’s so easy to get distracted by all the things that need to be done around the house. However, to become successful, one has to have the discipline to avoid those distractions and stay focused on the task at hand. Now I’m not saying there aren’t important household tasks that need to be taken care of, because all of us have them. And I know there are certain chores that need to be done on a daily basis.

What I’m talking about is the work that needs to be done to build your business. You need to be focused on that and that only, like calling leads, making sales calls, giving business presentations, and helping others in your organization. Unless you’re an extraordinary multi-tasker, all distractions must be eliminated. Working to build your home business is the key, busy work does not count.

This holds true for any type of work at home business, including Mary Kay, Tupperware, Arbonne, Amway, TriVita, MonaVie, Send Out Cards, Herbalife, Melaleuca, or the like. Building one of these businesses does not happen overnight, and it’s certainly not going to happen by NOT dong the work.

If you have the desire, drive and fortitude, you can build a successful work at home business. However, staying the course, and avoiding distractions is a point of paramount significance.

Healthy Choice Bailout Plan – Start a Home Business

People around the world are worried about what’s happening in the United States. China just announced that they are to stop investing, or loaning money to American banks and lending institutions. Here is a quote from one of the many online news sites, "Chinese regulators have told domestic banks to stop interbank lending to U.S. financial institutions to prevent possible losses during the financial crisis, the South China Morning Post reported on Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008."

Why starting a home business may be the best bailout plan available for you. Here’s how I got there!

In a newsletter I received from The Research and Editorial Staff of The Association for Investor Awareness, Inc. (AIA), on September 25, 2008, they give no evidence that the "proposed bailout plan WILL work." There is a lot of skepticism on both sides of the aisle; proponents for the bailout plan say it’s the same plan that saved Japan and the U.S. at various times:

"Many economists believe that Uncle Sam’s $700 billion cash transfusion to our financial service industry will keep many essential firms alive to provide the credit the economy requires. The proponents also believe that we will eventually grow our way out of the hole, and everybody’s books -including Uncle Sam’s – will be balanced again.

There is precedent for believing that the bailout plan will work. Japan used it after its soaring real estate market collapsed in the 1980’s and the country’s banks went into a death spiral. Although the country subsequently endured a 12 year recession, it wasn’t particularly hard on its citizens. In any event, the long recession was infinitely better than the depression that might have otherwise been Japan’s fate.

Big cash infusions also rescued the U.S. economy at various times in the past. For example, the Great Depression dragged on for over a decade until preparations for WW-2 flooded the economy with money. The theory goes that using the same technique early in a downturn can prevent it from starting in the first place. "(1)

Sounds like this is the only thing that will save the U.S. economy and prevent a depression, or at least, a deep recession. I don’t know about you but I tend to lean towards the pessimistic side, the side of "we the people" have to take care of our selves. Uncle Sam, with their excessive spending and idiotic plans, has caused the mess we are in today. I’m not in favor of the government letting this country sink into deeper debt because of the incompetency of the multi-millionaire corporate execs that made some bad decisions. I’m relying on my home business for financial security, NOT the federal government.

This proposed bailout plan, in my opinion, is like using a band aid to reattach a severed limb. It may slow down the bleeding, but I don’t believe it will ever solve the crisis we are currently in, without some major surgery.

Additional quote from the AIA, "Critics of the Treasury’s rescue plan believe the bailouts will only delay more bank failures and a sharp recession by a few months. The most vocal naysayers are adamant that the delay will make the inevitable problems worse. They also insist that the bailouts will put the Treasury in the same dire straits as the industry it is trying to rescue.

Furthermore, the bailout opponents argue, since the government will ultimately get the money from the American people, the rescue plan represents a gigantic case of robbing Peter to pay Paul. The critics go on to cite many examples where the hot potato game of passing the debt didn’t end happily."(1)

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. This is a free country (but maybe not for long); so the time to make a decision as a citizen of this (once) "great country". Are you going to sit by and rely on the government to take care of you, or are you going to take action and do something about it?

Although there is little that individuals can do that will have any effect on the national crisis, we can at least protect ourselves. Starting a home business may be the best choice you will ever make. You can sit back and wait to see what happens, or you can start a home business today, and begin controlling your financial future.

If you have never thought of starting your own home business you may want to rethink the idea. With the eminent collapse of the financial market, many people are going to wind up unemployed. That unemployment may even be in your future. We are in dire times and the time to take action to protect your financial future is now. One of the best ways to begin is to start a home business.

Many financial analysts say we are headed for a depression, or at least, a major recession. Many retirement plans are going to be lost. The housing market has already taken a big hit. As much as I’d like to believe the last part of his quote, I my opinion, I believe that the bailout package is just a band aid on what is eminent, a full blown depression. So again, what are you going to do to protect your financial future?

I’ve been talking about the collapse of our nation for about nine years. And by no means am I a financial genius, or educated in that field. I’m just like the majority of Americans, a hard worker who is trying to make an honest living. Our country was a leader in manufacturing and that’s primarily how it grew to what it once was (I say once, because we are not the same as in years past). Over time, entrepreneurs started small businesses on their own, some with the help of lending institutes. It was these small businesses that drove the economy and created jobs and decreased unemployment. Look around today, how many small businesses are failing? Or struggling to survive? I would have to say that there are more failing than are prosperous. Folks, another sign of the state of our economy.

You may be saying that I’m a nut-case, but that’s ok, I’m a big boy and I can take it. As a previous small business owner of 21 years, I know what it takes to survive, and I’ll survive the name calling from people who disagree with me. But there is one thing I know for sure, if you don’t do something to protect your financial future (maybe like starting your own home business) and you believe that Social Security, or your retirement plan will be around to take care of you, then who is the nut-case? I’m really not a gloom and doom person, but I do see what is happening, and yes, it’s happening fast.

Home Business Success by Healthy Choice

In one of my previous articles, I wrote about starting a home business, and the fact that anything worthwhile (like a home business) takes time and hard work. The same day I wrote that article I received a newsletter from one of my online friends. In the newsletter there was a story titled, "There Are 3 Kinds of People". I thought it was important enough for anyone attempting to build a home business that I thought I would share the story in its entirety. The story is courtesy of the Symbiotic Givers (individuals making things happen, rather then wondering what happened).

"There Are 3 Kinds of People

Which one are you?  
1. People who make things happen 
2. People who watch things happen 
3. People who wonder what happened

The people who make things happen internalize what it will be like, when the thing to be done has been accomplished. These people tend to talk less and show more by their results.

The people who watch things happen internalize fear. This fear and lack of action makes them a watcher. The playing it safe thought process guarantees that they will only get the crumbs of life, that are left over from everyone else. These people tend to talk more and analyze everything. They always talk about how they would do it differently if it were them. The big problem here is that it never is them; because all they ever do is watch.

The people who wonder what happened internalize their own confusion. Since it is easier for them to just act confused; rather than find out the who, what, where, and why of an occurrence. They never get to really enjoy the sweet feeling of personal accomplishment and becoming all that you can become. These people talk the most. They engage their mouths and let their lips flap away; and then they engage their brain after the fact. Usually the only way these people could say less would be by talking more.

Focus on results and forget the excuses

People of results do not have or accept excuses. Either it got done or it did not get done.

‘Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good’ "

What type of person are you? If your home business is successful, or you’re on the path to success, chances are, you make things happen. As mentioned previously, it takes hard work to build a home business. Working hard is NOT busy work, BUT rather the tough work that needs to be done in order to be successful. Are you just doing busy work? If so, stop and start doing what needs to be done to make your home business a success.

The success of your home business will only come from YOU! Don’t rely on your family, friends, sponsor, or anyone else to build your home business. Don’t sit around watching things happen, because NOTHING is going to happen unless you make things happen. And most importantly, stop wonder what happened to my business or what will happen to my business? Nobody has ever succeeded by wondering, what if.

Healthy Choice Home Business

Have you ever wondered how many people actually start a home business and quit before they had a chance to enjoy the fruits of their labor? I know for a fact that it takes hard work and time to succeed in a home business. A home business is no different than a traditional brick and mortar business. Anything worthwhile is the same! Just like the old saying goes, there is no free lunch.

Besides, doesn’t hard work build character? And isn’t character who we are, or who we become?

So if you were to start a home based business, would you survive? Do you have what it takes to endure the tough times? Do you have the character to keep going with the unrelenting effort it takes to make a good living working from home? Those are some questions I ask myself each day when I’m writing for my blogs and forums, but if I don’t do it, it won’t get done.

My thoughts and feelings are more than likely the same thoughts and feelings that anyone has, you know, those thoughts of doubt. I sometimes wonder if I have what it takes to make it in a home based business. Many of these negative thoughts enter your mind when things aren’t going the way you planned. An example of something going haywire would be when your computer crashes and you don’t have the time to fix it, let alone write your posts.

What do you do, give up? Do you just throw in the towel and quit? I’ve been in that position before, but I have never ever quit. I don’t consider myself a quitter, and you shouldn’t either. What if our Lord and Savior, Jesus, quit? What would have happened if He threw in the towel and quit? He never quit; He stayed on earth until His job was complete. Do you want to be like Jesus? Or do you want to quit? Give up? Stop moving forward?

Are you the type of person that doesn’t give up when the going gets tough? Would you like to be on a winning? Are you content to be on a losing team? Why don’t you make a choice right now? Today! Whatever you decide, just don’t quit!

This may be frustrating because most people are not going to invest in a business until they have a fairly accurate idea of what they can earn. In most cases the franchisor is not purposely being difficult. The Federal Trade Commission (F.T.C.) and many states have stringent regulations as to how franchisers can provide this information to prospective franchisees. However, there are ways to get this important information.

Many franchisers used unjustified or misleading earnings claims to sell their franchise opportunities, so in 1979 Congress passed legislation authorizing the F.T.C. to regulate the franchise industry, with an effort to try and stop any such bad practices. Many states also passed similar legislation. The current F.T.C. and state rules do not forbid a franchise company from supplying information about the earnings that can be achieved in their business.
